NAMM 2025: The Neve 88C brings classic compression to your desktop

Neve has created some of the most beloved compressors, consoles, and preamps in the history of music technology. The new Neve 88C desktop compressor brings the warm, thick British character is a perfect complement to any source signal and does a lot to fatten up mixes – especially “in the box”.

Neve introduced their VCA compressors to the market in the early 70s, and their popularity caught on quickly. Compressors with this topology are clean, clear, and fast. They do “extreme” compression settings well, which was a new concept at the time.

The newest outboard compressor in their product catalog is the 88C. Pulled from the channel strip from the 88R console, it’s a two-channel VCA compressor in a sleek, compact desktop unit.

Controls and Features

Each channel is independent and works in mono or stereo. Both channels have a stereo link to operate as a pair, but there is individual control over each channel. There are Ratio, Threshold, Release, and Makeup Gain controls for both sides.

Ratios go from subtle 1:1 to full-on limiting. The most unique feature might be the Adaptive Attack Technology. Attack times adjust automatically as the unit reads the incoming transients of the input signal.

It also features Neve’s Anti-Breath Technology. This is designed to prevent artifacts created by sudden level drops. There are three side-chain filters for fine tuning the response without unnecessary triggering from low end frequencies.

With an enclosure that’s as tight as it gets, the Neve 88C is a small desktop two-channel compressor that packs quite a punch!
