Propellerhead rebrands to Reason Studios and launches the highly-anticipated Reason 11

A big, two-part piece of news has come from Propellerhead Software’s headquarters, bringing big changes to both the company, and its most famed product. The Swedish company turned a lot of heads from the music industry in its most recent move, announcing that Ernst Nathorst-Böös was being replaced as CEO by Niklas Agevik. As it turns out, the new man in charge brought lots of ideas along for the ride with him.

The first part of the announcement, as it turns out, regards the company as a whole. Propellerhead Software is now going to be known as “Reason Studios.” This should come as no surprise to anybody — after 25 years as a company, Reason quickly blow up in popularity among music producers. So much so, that it now sits among the top shelf of the best DAWs out there today. Now, with all of the name recognition Reason has built up, this rebrand should eliminate any further confusion from those who are quite familiar with Reason, but get confused when asked about its developer. Simply put, Reason is now being created by “Reason Studios,” making this major change sound quite reasonable. The rebrand is not live yet, as the company is giving it some time as people soak up the new information, but should go into effect within the next couple of weeks.

The second, and arguably bigger news regards the product itself — that’s right everyone, Reason 11 is here. Along with it, some now devices: Quartet Chorus Ensemble, Sweeper Modulation Effect, Channel EQ and Dynamics, and a Master Bus Compressor. Additionally, Reason 11 brings new workflow features such as curved automation, audio clip crossfades (finally), and the ability to mute MIDI notes, or draw multiple notes with a quick gesture.

However, the most notable change coming to the newest version of the DAW is its ability to be used as a plugin inside of any other DAW you might be using. The plugin version will be called Reason Rack, and it will be available to download alongside your Reason 11 purchase as VST right away when it becomes available on September 25th, with an AU version to be released later in the year.

Reason 11 will have three different versions and price points. Reason 11 Intro includes 31 devices and comes at $99, Reason 11 (the standard) includes 55 devices for $399, and Reason 11 Suite with 72 devices will be available for $599. Existing owners of Reason can upgrade to Reason 11 for $129, or Reason 11 Suite for $249. Finally, anybody who purchased Reason 10 or Reason 10 Intro on or after August 1st of this year can upgrade to Reason 11 for the amazing price of free.
