The latest release from Kurzweil, the SP8, is tailor-made for performance

The latest release from Kurzweil at NAMM 2026, the SP8, is tailor-made for performance. Whether it’s on the stage or in the studio this is a terrific digital piano/synthesizer hybrid.

It’s got the robust sound library you’d expect from the company, and with the SP8 they’ve added organ models to the acoustic and electric piano instruments. Kurzweil also added a 6-operator FM synth to the selection of sounds.

Sounds on sounds

Also included are vector synthesis waveforms and curated sounds from previous instruments like the K2700, K2088/61, and PC4. Overall more than 1,000 factory patches are included and they’re organized into 10 categories. No one is complaining about 2GB worth of sounds to work with right out of the box!

But it’s obviously got much more than pianos and organs. There are strings, harpsichords, clavients, bells, and so much more. It has the standard 256-voice polyphony and over 4,000 user locations for players to store their own presets.

Real piano feel

The keybed itself is a full octave range of 88 notes and hammer-action, with the ubiquitous modulation and pitch wheels at the top of the casing to the left.

As for aesthetics, it’s got a svelte look and layout with the control section conveniently located in the center above the keys. It’s very well-built and was clearly designed to stand up to the risks that come with transporting it between shows and studio sessions.
